Fly direct from Cape Town to Mauritius

From November 2022 Air Mauritius will be offering two flights per week from Cape Town International Airport directly to Mauritius. No more stopovers en route is good news for travellers who wish to reach their dream island destination without delay.

Mauritius has long been a beloved destination for South African travellers as well as expats who have decided to make the Indian Ocean island their second home. While Covid-19 and subsequent travel restrictions put a damper on international travel, it’s heartening to note that in the first half of this year, Mauritius welcomed 33 601 travellers from South Africa. This number, according to the Mauritian Tourism Promotion Agency (MTPA), is an 80% recovery from pre-pandemic levels.

Director of MTPA Arvind Bundhun believes that ‘this positive and upward trend will continue through the year and into 2023’.

Mauritius’s tourism industry is the main driver of the island’s economy, which suffered heavy losses over the various stages of the national and international lockdowns. With the easing of a number of Covid-19-related restrictions, due mainly to the country’s aggressive vaccination campaign, the MTPA is seeing tourism numbers recovering to pre-Covid-19 levels.

Currently Air Mauritius offers flights from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, with one-way Economy Class seats costing around R5 500. FlySafair earlier this year also extended its route capacity to include twice-weekly flights from OR Tambo to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.

In addition, Air Mauritius will be offering two weekly overnight flights departing at 22.05pm from Cape Town and arriving the following morning in Mauritius at 5.10am.

Tests for vaccinated and unvaccinated passengers are no longer required, although mask-wearing in certain places on the island is still required. All in all good news for anyone yearning for a few weeks sojourn in this tropical paradise.
