The West is one of the prime areas for real estate investment in Mauritius, purely because of what the Black River area has to offer. Think nature reserves, UNESCO heritage sites, pretty stretches of beach leading to startlingly blue ocean, well-loved surfing spots, mountain bike trails and more.

This is the spectacular view from Marguery Heights.

If you want to get the most out of Mauritius, it helps to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle. Those who love sports, being in nature, and exploring island attractions will never run out of things to do in The West.

Things to do in Black River

If you’re a water baby, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities in Black River. The surfing, kiting, stand-up paddling and scuba diving locations here attract enthusiasts from around the world, while deep-sea fishing and yacht excursions are enormously popular for those who prefer being on rather than in the water.

There’s nothing nicer than swimming in the warm Indian Ocean though. The beaches are beautiful and the lagoon, despite not being as clear as the ocean because of the river that feeds it, offers a multitude of additional activities such as water skiing and boating. Le Morne Mountain is a must-do for hikers – you can walk to the top without a guide – and the Tamarin Falls, also known as the Seven Waterfalls, is a major tourist attraction. Access is via the neighbouring village of Quatre Bornes and a guide is recommended for this one. Another well-loved attraction is Casela World of Adventures.

Sustainable living

For the practicalities of life, Black River is the location for private medical clinics, international schools and Middlesex University London, which has a campus at Cascavelle. Paul et Virginie is a pre-primary and primary school offering the French curriculum, Telfair International Primary School is an English co-educational school while West Coast International Secondary School is the only English-medium secondary school in the area.

Uniciti is now pursuing its sustainable development of the Medine Smart City, since receiving its Smart City Certificate from the Board of Investment in 2018. In line with government’s vision to make Mauritius a knowledge hub, the Medine Smart City will encompass a live-work-enjoy-learn philosophy. Education and higher education are one of the main pillars of the much-anticipated development.
